Journey through the Bible: The Great I Am

Scripture Reading: John 14:6 "Jesus said to him, I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him." #1156

Introduction: Last time we ask the question: Who is the Greatest in God's Kingdom? Matthew 18 #1056 Today we look at Who Jesus says He is in His "I Am" statements. John 6-15

Proposition: We must come to the great I Am.

T.S.: When we come to the great "I Am" Jesus, we enter into life.

I. The significance of Jesus claiming I Am.

-In the Old Testament God refers to himself as I Am. The most significant of these is when God calls Moses to lead His people out of Egypt. Exodus 3:13-15 #59 Here God calls Himself "I Am Who I Am" Tell the people "I Am" has sent you. In the Hebrew this is YHWH where we get the word Yahweh.

-Jesus is recorded 23 times in the book of John claiming a version of I Am. Each of these statements is Jesus signifying that He is divine. Each time the audience understands and often objects to His usage of these statements. The ones that come to our mind the most are the ones used in metaphor. Let us look at them and see their usage in the Old Testament.

II. We are called to follow the Great I Am!

-I am the bread of life. John 6:35, 48, 51 #1144 OT usage: Manna. Exodus 16:4, 15 #73

-I am the light of the world. John 8:12, 9:5 #1147 OT usage: Pillar of Fire. Exodus 13:21 #70

-I am the door of the sheep. John 10:7-18 #1150 OT usage: Protection of God for Israel

-I am the good shepherd. John 10:11-14 #1150 OT usage: Psalm 23 #581 Isaiah 40:11 #770

-I am the resurrection and the life John 11:25 #1152 OT usage: Resurrection. Daniel 12:2 #964

-I am the way, the truth, and the life. John 14:6 #1156 OT usage: Walk in truth. Deut. 26:17

-I am the true vine. John 15:1 #1157 OT usage: True Israel. Isaiah 5:1-7 #730

As we can see, Jesus was telling us of His great divinity in each of these statements.

Let us follow the Great I Am for He is the path of eternal life.
