The Coming of the Holy Spirit and the start of the Church


Journey through the Bible: The Good News Confirmed Through The Holy Spirit

Scripture Reading: Luke 24:46-48 "Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that repentance for the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high." #1136

Introduction: Our Journey through the Bible has led us through the gospels about Jesus. We have seen His birth, baptism, teaching, death, burial and resurrection. We now start looking at the impact of His resurrection and the service we are to perform for the kingdom. Today we look at the establishment of the church through the preaching about Jesus Christ confirmed by the Holy Spirit.

Proposition: We are called to follow the word of the Lord.

T.S.: Today we see the Spirit coming in power and the proclamation of the Lord.

I. We ought to be amazed by the power of the Holy Spirit. Acts 2:1-13 #1167

-The Holy Spirit comes from Heaven. V. 1-3

-The Holy Spirit gives us the power to proclaim the Lord. V.4

-The Holy Spirit is clear and precise to all people. V. 5-13

II. We ought to use every scripture to point to Jesus. Acts 2:14-36 #1168

-Peter addresses the crowd. He doesn't say look at us, he says look at scripture. V. 14-36

-Look to the prophet Joel: The promise of the Spirit. V. 17-22

-Fulfillment of the scripture is in Jesus. V. 23-36

-Jesus is raised from the dead and at the right hand of God. He poured out the Spirit.

-Look to the words of David: He points to his descendant Jesus Christ.

III. We ought to repent and be baptized for the forgiveness of sins. Acts 2:37-47

-When we are cut to the heart we look for direction.

-Biblical direction: Repent and be Baptized!

-Salvation from this corrupt generation!

-The saved start to fellowship, the establishment of the Lord's church.
