Journey through the Bible: Resolving Conflict
Scripture Reading: Matthew 5:23-24 "So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift." #1039
Introduction: Our Journey through the Bible has led us through the gospels about Jesus. We have seen His birth, baptism, teaching, death, burial and resurrection. We now start looking at the impact of His resurrection and the service we are to perform for the kingdom. We looked at the establishment of the church through the preaching about Jesus Christ confirmed by the Holy Spirit. Now we see the church spreading through the proclamation of Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit.
Proposition: We are called to resolve disputes in the Lord's church.
T.S.: Today we see a major issue come up and a resolution to solve the issue.
I. We must serve every member of the Lord's church. Acts 6:1 #1172
-A complaint and dispute arose because of the distribution of food.
-Notice this is a cultural issue of different prejudice.
-We know that we are to serve our brother's by the Lord's teaching. Luke 10:25-37 #1115
II. We must utilize each person's gifts. Acts 6:2-4 #1172
-The apostles gifts were to spread the gospel, not serve tables.
-They suggest seven men to do this service that are competent and full of the spirit.
-We must each devote ourselves to the gifts that God has given. 1 Thess. 5:12-24
III. When we resolve disputes, the Lord's church can grow. Acts 6:5-7 #1172
-The solution was pleasing to everyone.
-Notice who are chosen to serve. Hellenists or Greeks
-The work was endorsed by the apostles through prayer and laying on of hands.
-The word of God was then able to spread rapidly. Romans 12:9-21 #1215
Let us resolve what may be between us and serve one another in love and so grow the church.
