Preaching Truth: Stephen's Sermon

Journey through the Bible: Preaching Truth

Scripture Reading: 2 Timothy 4:1-4 "I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths." #1275

Introduction: Our Journey through the Bible has led us through the gospels about Jesus. We have seen His birth, baptism, teaching, death, burial and resurrection. We now start looking at the impact of His resurrection and the service we are to perform for the kingdom. We looked at the establishment of the church through the preaching about Jesus Christ confirmed by the Holy Spirit. Now we see the church spreading through the proclamation of Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit.

Proposition: We are called to preach the truth of the gospel of Christ.

T.S.: Today we see Stephen standing for the truth amidst lies.

I. We are called to speak and defend the gospel of Christ. Acts 6:8-15 #1173

-Stephen is doing the work of an evangelist. 2 Timothy 4:1-5 #1275

-No one can rebuke the truth of the word of God.

-Stephens' words are twisted to accuse him of blasphemy.

-Stephens' face is that of an angel. (Innocence)

II. We are to know the word of God to defend against false accusations. Acts 7:1-53 #1173-5

-The focus of the charge is blasphemy against Moses and God. (Law and Prophets)

-This becomes Stephens' focus.

-Let us read and listen to these noble words from Stephen.

III. We are to know that the truth will make some people angry. Acts 7:54-60 #1175

-The audience of religious leaders becomes enraged and grind their teeth.

-Stephen is full of the Holy Spirit and sees heaven open up.

-Stephen is full of compassion even when others are killing him.

Let us stand for the truth and share it with a lost and dying world everyday.
