Journey through the Bible: Peter the Bold and Jesus the Humble

Scripture Reading: John 21:15-17 "When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord you know that I love you." He said to him, "Feed my lambs." He said to him a second time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." He said to him, "Tend my sheep." He said to him a third time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, "Do you love me?" and he said to him, "Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you." Jesus said to him "Feed my sheep." #1165

Introduction: Jesus has entered into Jerusalem with great fanfare and cleansed the Temple. The Pharisees and Sadducees put Jesus to the test with some questions they thought could not be answered without impunity. Jesus has taught about judgement upon those who worship in false religion and He predicted the destruction of the Temple and his return. Matthew 24 #1064, Luke 21 #1130 We are to be steadfast in our faith till the final judgement. Matthew 25 #1065 Last time we looked at the Lord's anointed one Jesus. Matthew 26 #1067 Today we see Peter being bold, and Jesus being humble. Matthew 26:30-75, John 13:36-18:18

Proposition: We are called to humbly follow Jesus.

T.S.: We see Jesus announcing Peter's betrayal, praying for everyone, and Peter's actual betrayal.

I. We need to take heed the warnings of Jesus.

-Matthew 26:30-35 #1068, John 13:36-38 #1156

-Jesus gives us many warnings about sin and denial.

-Peter boldly states that he will not deny the Lord in any way. He denies Jesus' warnings.

-We must not deny our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Matt. 10:32-33, 1 Jn. 2:22-23

II. We see the humility of Jesus in His teaching and prayers.

-John 14:1-17:26 #1156, Matthew 26:36-46 #1068

-In John we see much more teaching and comforting by Jesus.

-Two main "I am" statements. Way, truth and life. True Vine. 14, 15

-Promise and work of the Holy Spirit. 14, 16, Sorrow to Joy. 16

-Prayer that is threefold. His Glory, His disciples faith, unity of the faithful.

-In Matthew we see Jesus prayer of sorrow. Let this cup pass, but your will be done.

III. We see the humility of Jesus in obedience and the boldness of Peter and denial.

-Matthew 26:47-75. #1068, John 18:1-18 #1160

-The betrayer comes with those from religious elite. Peter attacks!

-Jesus calms the crowd and heals, goes peacefully to his trial.

-Trial by night with false witnesses and a beating of Jesus.

-Peter denies Jesus three times and weeps bitterly.

Let us humbly follow Jesus in unity and take heed his warnings.
