Scripture Reading: Matthew 3:16-17 "As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, 'This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.'"
Introduction: Last time we looked at the great confession that Jesus is the Christ. Matthew 16 #1054 Today we see the transfiguration and Jesus as the Son of God. Matthew 17 #1055, Mk. 9:2-13 #1084
After Peter's great confession as Jesus as the Christ we saw that he then rebuked Jesus for saying He would have to die at the hands of the scribes and elders. Today we see Peter and all of us get to see the true power of God and .
Proposition: We must have faith and witness to others that Jesus is the Son of God.
T.S.: We see three witnesses to the power and authority of Jesus.
I. We see the witnesses of Jesus being transfigured.
-Matthew 17:1-13 #1055, Mark 9:2-13 #1084, Luke 9:28-36 #1113
-Here there are literally three individuals who witnessed Jesus as God's Son.
-We see a triad of holiness. Moses, Elijah and Jesus.
-We hear the voice of God witnessing to His Son.
-We are told how the plan unfolds. John represents Elijah, Jesus Death and Resurrection.
II. We witness the power of Jesus over sin and death.
-Matthew 17:14-23 #1055
-Jesus has all authority. We must have faith in Him.
-If we have just a small amount of faith, great things can happen.
-We are told again of the plans of God, for Jesus to die, be buried and raised on the third day.
III. We witness the inheritance Jesus has because He is God's Son.
-Matthew 17:24-27 #1056
-Are taxes collected from the kings Son?
-No, but Jesus doesn't want to offend so His power is seen.
Let us witness to others that Jesus is the Son of God and that all authority belongs to Him.
