Scripture Reading: Philippians 4:4-7 "Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice Let you reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." #1258
Introduction: Last time we looked at Jesus rejected at Nazareth. Luke 4:16-30 #1104, John 4:43-54 #1142 Today we will look at Jesus in Jerusalem. John 5 #1142-1143 Next week, we will see the first part of three messages on The Sermon on the Mount. Mathew 5 #1038
Jesus has done many miracles already and many people are following him. Today he does a miracle on the Sabbath and he gets condemned because he told the man to get up take his bed and walk. Instead of rejoicing, these folks looked for false, we need to rejoice.
Proposition: We are to rejoice in the one and only begotten son of God.
T.S.: Today we see Jesus heal a man on the Sabbath and teach the truth about himself.
I. We are to rejoice in the healing work of the Son of God.
-John 5:1-18 #1142
-Jesus enters Jerusalem and the first thing he does is heal. V. 1-9
-Many had come to this pool for its healing properties.
-Jesus is the one who can truly heal, and he heals even when we do not know him. (Romans 5:1-11) #1208
-Response of the Jews. "Who told you to pick up your bed?" V. 10-18
-The man had to look for Jesus, he was healed and didn't know Jesus.
-Jesus not only healed on the Sabbath, he compares himself to God.
II. We are to accept the authority of Jesus because of God's witness.
- John 5:19-47 #1143
-Truly, Truly Jesus is doing the will of the father. V. 19-24
-God bears witness to Jesus.
-Truly, Truly the voice of Jesus has the power to heal. V. 25-29
-If you do not believe the witness of God, believe John the Baptist. V. 30-36
-The true witness however, is God doing work through Jesus Christ. V. 37-45
-If you find no other witness to believe, believe in Moses testimony. V. 46
Let us rejoice on the healing power of Jesus and the testimony of God the Father.
