Jesus First Miracle: Water to Wine
Journey Through The Bible: Jesus turns water to wine
Scripture Reading: John 14:2-3 "Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father's house are many rooms If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also." #1156
Introduction: Last time we looked at Jesus calling the first disciples. Matt. 4:18-22 #1038, Mk. 1:16-20 #1073, Lk. 5:1-11 #1104, John 1:35-51 #1138 Today we see the miracle of Jesus turning Water to Wine. John 2:1-12 #1139 Next week we will see that Jesus Cleanses the Temple and teaching Nicodemus. John 2:13-3:21 #1140
Only John records this account of Jesus turning the water to wine. He uses this event as a stepping stone for the miracles of Jesus in which he calls signs and refers back to it again in John 4:46. Jesus does not seem ready to start showing his power as he states to his mother, "My hour has not yet come." We see Mary's faith in Jesus to take care of the situation. Let's read the Word. John 2:1-12 #1139
Proposition: We are called to believe in the power of Jesus.
T.S.: We show this belief by following the word of God.
I. First, we see Jesus honoring His mother. (Exodus 20:12 #78)
-John 2:1-5 #1138
- Everyone is invited to this wedding. V. 1-2 (Matthew 22:1-14)
-Jesus' mother states that they have run out of wine. V. 3
- Jesus is not concerned about wine, but his hour of revealing. V. 4(Matthew 26:18)
-His mother has complete faith in Jesus. "Do whatever he tells you."
-We are to do all that Jesus tells us.
II. Second, we see Jesus providing the very best.
- John 2:6-10 #1138
-Jesus doesn't go to the local super market and pick up more wine.
-Everyone had been invited, there was no more wine period.
-He makes the very best out of water. V. 6-8
-This confused the Master of the Banquet. V. 9-10
III. Third, we see that this miracle revealed his glory.
-John 2:11 #1138
-This is the first sign and the disciples put their faith in him.
-This should lead us to faith as well.
Let us believe in the power of Jesus and know that he has provided us with the very best.
