Journey Through The Bible: Jesus Cleanses the Temple and teaches Nicodemus

Scripture Reading: Isaiah 56:6-7 "And the foreigners who join themselves to the Lord, to minister to him, to love the name of the Lord, and to be his servants, everyone who keeps the Sabbath and does not profane it, and holds fast my covenant-these I will bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer; their burnt offerings and their sacrifices will be accepted on my altar; for my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples." #791

Introduction: Last time we looked at the miracle of Jesus turning Water to Wine. John 2:1-12 #1139 Today we see that Jesus Cleanses the Temple and teaching Nicodemus. John 2:13-3:21 #1140 Next week we will look at Jesus and John Baptizing, John exalts Christ / imprisoned. John 3:22-36 #1140, Lk. 3:19

Today we look at the first time Jesus cleanses the temple. This is at the beginning of his ministry and makes a certain Pharisee take note and come to Jesus by night to learn from Jesus. Jesus also cleanses the temple again at the end of his ministry when he enters Jerusalem for the final time. (Luke 19:45-48 #1128)

Proposition: We are called to honor God and be reborn.

T.S.: We are to honor His temple and have a spiritual birth.

I. We are to honor the temple of the Lord.

-John 2:13-25 #1139

- This temple was supposed to be a place of worship. V. 13-17 (Isaiah 56:6-7)

-The house of prayer had become a place of business. V. 16 (Den of Thieves)

- The Jews demand a sign for this authority. V. 18(1 Cor. 1:22-25)

-He prophesies and tells of His death. V. 19-22

-We are to honor the spiritual temple of the Lord. (1 Cor.3:16-17, 6:19-20)

-Jesus knows our hearts. V. 23-25

II. We must be reborn in the Spirit to enter the kingdom of God.

- John 3:1-21 #1139

-Nicodemus comes to Jesus by night to talk and learn. (Fear of others)

-Jesus teaches a new birth. Not physical, but spiritual. (Romans 6:1-11)

-The Son of Man was lifted up and all who believe have eternal life.

-Everyone has the opportunity for this eternal life. (Romans 10:8-13)

-So, how is one reborn? We are to believe, confess, repent, be baptized, and live faithful.

Let us honor the temple of God and enter the kingdom of God through new birth.
