Journey through the Bible: Humbly Follow Jesus

Scripture Reading: 1 Peter 5:5b-7 "Clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. Humble yourselves, therefore under God's mighty hand, that He may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you." #1298

Introduction: Last time we saw the Pharisees and Sadducees putting Jesus to the test with some questions they thought could not be answered without impunity. Matthew 22:15-46 Today we look at judgement upon those who worship in false religion. Matthew 23 #1063

Proposition: We are called to humbly follow Jesus.

T.S.: We see Jesus condemning the teachers of the law in His day.

I. We are to humble ourselves and follow Jesus.

-Matthew 23:1-12 #1063

-We must practice what we preach!

-We should not make a show of our faith.

-Phylacteries, banquets, titles.

-If we serve in humility, God will lift us up.

II. We are humble ourselves to God's teaching instead of the doctrine of man.

-Matthew 23:13-39 #1063

-Jesus gives seven woes to the teachers of the day and their hypocrite ways.

-Putting down seekers, false teaching, swearing and making oaths, neglecting faith, ceremonial cleansings, false face, judging history instead of present.

-Because of these things prophets, wise men and teachers will be sent to teach truth.

-But will we listen to those who bring good news?

-Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Let us humble ourselves and follow the teaching of Jesus instead of doctrines of man.
